Mental Health Resources for Hispanic/Latin X Communities

Mental Health Resources for Hispanic/Latinx Communities

By Maia Price

The Hispanic/Latinx is our country's second-largest ethnic group, however, the Hispanic/Latinx community continually faces barriers in accessing mental health care.

Many Hispanic/Latinx people have experienced diverse forms of stigma, including being turned away when they try to seek help for mental health challenges, resulting in fewer people seeking help and prolonged suffering.

As a community, we need to reduce the stigma about mental health and illness by reaching out and spreading hope to those who are struggling.

Here are a few resources that may provide the support or help:

  1. Voices of Hope: Mind & Self-Care is an online resource developed by the NAD Health Ministries to raise awareness and provide education on potential mental health needs, addictions, and risk of violence during times of crises. (Click here to learn more).

  2. National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) provides a three-part video series, Compartiendo Esperanza to aide in spreading mental health awareness within Hispanic/Latinx communities. Topics include: Youth and Mental Wellness, Community Leaders and Mental Wellness, and Latinx Families and Mental Wellness” (Click here to learn more)

  3. American Society of Hispanic Psychiatry promotes research, education, advocacy, and support to Hispanic communities. They offer a “Find a Physician” feature on their website.

  4. Therapy for Latinx provides a database of therapists who either identify as Latinx or have worked closely with and understand the unique needs of the Latinx community. The website is also offered in Spanish.” (Click here to learn more)

Reducing stigma and making mental health resources more readily available for Hispanic/Latinx communities is a small step in helping this growing community. We all can help!
